Sometimes you are presented with a choice that you simply don't want to take. In those situations the game is either presenting you with an easy and a hard way to deal with a problem (the latter typically providing more rewards in one way or another) or it provides you with another way to bypass the threat by using your skills, perks, companions, equipment or anything else that you may not have due to the way you've played through the game. That way players are rewarded for making certain choices while also sometimes being punished for the same choices.

Sometimes however a game will simple present you with a very difficult challenge and give you no other incentive to do it then 'Well, it's there if you want to do it.' While in some games I'd consider doing that challenge I can imagine how few nanoseconds it took for my dungeoneer to decide to avoid the totally optional fight and pretend it doesn't exist.

Maybe we'll see that enemy later, maybe not. Who knows eh?
