No matter how careful you are in your exploration, there’s always going to be things that you won’t be prepared for. Cave systems have just too many out of the way places that your torch light won’t reach, hidey holes for enemies to pop out of and ambush you. It only takes one of them to cause serious problems, especially if you’re low on health and supplies or already trapped in a dead end with no way out but mining up.
The most important piece of advice I can give for surviving such events is to try and remain calm. People in panic make rash decisions, most of which will land them in even more trouble. Try to get some distance from the threat so you have time to consider your options and possibly come up with a plan. If you can’t escape it entirely, do your best to stall with blocks, running or jumping to a higher vantage point. Try to avoid descending further down, as it eliminates the possibility of jumping over and past your enemy as they climb up to you. Finally, keep your eyes peeled for any more enemies taking advantage of your distraction; the last thing you want is to escape one foe only to stumble into two more you didn’t notice.
