Mario Party DS, easily one of my top favorite DS games the system had to offer. Mario Party is a lot like monopoly, they're board games that are notable for demolishing friendships. Addicting they are indeed. MP has always been most comfortably known as a home console series, with Advance until DS having been the only handheld release. Then this fantastic game came along and honestly set the standard for MP on the go, a standard yet to be dethroned. This is not only my favorite on the go Mario Party to date, it's one of my all time favorites in the series. Fun minigames that take advantage of the newfound DS hardware, and so much replay value, so much to unlock and discover, this game is a trove of hours of fun. Different modes to tackle with multiple different challenges leaves a lot to offer. And there's a story mode. Yes, a story mode or at least some sort of objective to pine towards, some sort of single player campaign is important to these games. Important in a sense that no level-headed gamer would ever play this game with his or her friends, ergo running the risk of losing a friendship. This game is also notable for being one of "the last good MP games", aka, when Hudson Soft said bye. And I guess. Mario Party 9 was a radical new direction for better or worse. I still don't think it's a bad game, but it really did go in a direction that may have not been good for the series as a whole. Not like they had a choice with HS gone. Putting everyone in a vehicle to travel a linear board really isn't MP sadly. It really takes even more of the skill factor out and makes the game feel even more luck based. Even in Island Tour where everyone goes infantry again, a linear path where you hope the dice block works for you just isn't MP, and who knows if it will ever be the same again. No matter what MP's future holds, I love this game, and who knows, maybe things will go back to the way they were.
