It's not just liches that are dangerous when you start getting to higher levels; casters in general are increasingly capable of killing you extremely dead in a very quick fashion. They're made even more deadly if they have people guarding them so you aren't able to directly confront them in the first few rounds of combat so they can either get some buff spells prepared or get a few fireballs off before you can even start dealing with them.

At least non-undead magicians don't have all the resistances that liches have so there's that in my favour.
