After some offscreen grinding, we find ourselves reduced to 8-bit graphics.

While the game jokes about random encounters, there are actually no random encounters even in this old school RPG area. If you look at where I am hitting encounters, you will notice they are in the same positions they would be in all the other dungeon areas (ie at narrow passageways you cannot go around). So I believe they are just set encounters with no overworld sprite attached.
