Back in the 90s, the best Go computers were not very good. I play at maximum level, and give the AI a 2 stone handicap (basically they get 2 moves in a row to start the game). Computers from this era usually rely on an opening book, and this one clearly does too. After the opening, the AI is ahead. I'm pretty out of practice, so there are some tense moments, but in the end... well, the midgame is usually controlled by AB-Pruning. AB Pruning was the dominant algorithm used in Chess AI of the time (and beat the best pro-players in the world)... but Go is much more complicated than chess. It would take until 2006 (almost 10 years later) for MCTS to be invented, which finally opened the path for AIs to play go beyond the amateur level.
