Mmm, 2006. 2006 was a big year in gaming, given that it was a large jump for our three main gaming companies, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony. Microsoft and Sony would both incorporate HD graphics into gaming for the first time, while Nintendo would go in an entirely different direction like they always do with motion controls. Dauntlessly and successfully at that, given the critical claim for the Wii and its knack for still being able to go head to head with its competitors despite retaining standard quality picture. But I digress, after a few years of the original Xbox, given that it was for the most part superior to the PS2 is graphics and power, I felt that I should give Sony a little love and wait a year to get a PS3 instead during 2006. And one of the first games that I got with it, besides Virtua Fighter 5, and .... Sonic The Hedgehog (2006), I got Ridge Racer 7. Ridge Racer has always been a good racing franchise. And aside from the atrocious loading times which was a common trend throughout all PS3 games I know of so far anyway, Ridge Racer 7 didn't disappoint. As the PS3's response to Ridge Racer 6, the formula is followed very closely, but it's more better overall. Faster paced, better graphics, oh the graphics. To this day I still feel the graphics of this game look pretty good, even for a launch title. The gameplay is fun and solid, and the game generally has a good time maintaining a stable framerate. The main portion of the game consists of Grand Prix, par for the course with a racing game. Then there's UFRA racing events, akin to a mission mode style sort of gameplay. I don't cover them because there's a lot of them and to unlock all of them requires you to play often with just about every car in the game. Or every brand/manufacturer, which is still a lot of effort. Then there's the other half of the game, extreme battles. These Maximum Tune style races feature quad and 1v1 races and definitely live up to their name. Either way, this gem was a pleasure to play, is a pleasure to play, and definitely worth looking at.
