Spiders are an enemy that you don't actually encounter that often at low levels in D&D. The common household ones aren't even commented on outside of descriptions of rooms and the much larger variants are a big enough challenge that a group is needed to face them. Their ensaring webs and venom are nasty enough, but that's not all you have to look forward to.
There are spiders that can travel through the ethereal plane, spiders with fiendish traits and then there's the dreaded sword spider which is always hasted. All in all, copious amounts of fire are recommended when you come across them.
