As soon as you fly off with your brand-new ship, it loses half its value. Another half (of that half, so: a quarter) is lost due to the violence inherent in the system. It's virtually guaranteed that any ship with over a million units on the odometer has been shot at least ten billion times, making it so the hull has effectively been replaced at least three times. So, really, buying a used ship is kind of like buying a completely different vessel from spec, so the used ship salesmen are doing us a favor by giving us any money for it at all instead of just trashing it for scrap.
