Let’s Play The Bard’s Tale 4 | Will A New Player Enjoy It?
The Bard’s Tale 4: Barrows Deep launches on PC today, so Noa ventures into this RPG’s dungeons to see what impression it makes on a newcomer. In this PC gameplay Noa explores the city of Skara Brae and gets confused about the pronunciation of caltrops.
inXile’s The Bard’s Tale IV was kickstarted in 2015, promising to bring the classic RPG kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Have they succeeded? We’ll have a full The Bard’s Tale 4 review on Rock, Paper, Shotgun in the coming weeks, but for now you can see how it plays to a total newcomer. Noa gets to grips with the new grid based combat system, learns a few secret magic tunes and gets confused by an NPC who refuses to give her soup.
It’s got a very different pace to it compared to other RPGs, with a more strategic battle system that has elements of Intro The Breach as you try and use spatial attacks to knock people into the path of danger and keep your party out of incoming moves. Then you’ve got the dungeons themselves, which mix combat with puzzles and riddles - some of which are almost Zelda-like in their construction. There’s a lot going on under the hood in The Bard’s Tale 4.
