All commercially released levels in Doom, Doom II and Final Doom are possible to complete at any difficulty from a ‘fresh’ start. When I say ‘fresh’ I’m referring to the pistol and 50 bullets start you get by restarting after you die, a measly amount of firepower that, alone, is insufficient to deal with all the enemies a level has. It’s a good thing then that every level is littered with weapons, ammo, armour, health pickups and power-ups that allow you to eventually upgrade your arsenal and battle toe-to-toe with your adversaries on a more level playing field, even if the going to begin with us tough.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be situations where you’re scrambling for every last bit of ammo and health you can find, hiding from enemies at low health. The goodies needed for your survival are as scattered about as the enemies you face, meaning there’ll be times when you’re caught in a bad situation with no way to remedy it unless you clear the threats about you. When that happens the most important thing you can do is not panic; true to real life, panicking makes you more likely to be careless and make mistakes which will get you in even more trouble then you’re already in. Quickly look about for the most defensible position, head there and hunker down. Try to grab any ammo and health that’s within easy reach on the way but don’t put yourself in danger to do so unless the need is urgent. Focus on the most dangerous enemies first – hit scan and those who can kill you in a single hit – then work your way down until you’ve dealt with them all, then backtrack for any pickups you left behind previously before moving ahead into the unknown.

Some of what I just said about what to do when in bother may sound familiar to you. Aside from it being good advice, it’s what Sarge instructed a stranded and panicked soldier to do when everything was going wrong in Doom 3. While it didn’t save the man in question, it gave him the best chance to make it and likely helped him live that little bit longer.
