Let’s Play The Plutonia Experiment #05: Knocking on the Baron’s Door
As the nameless marine battles his way further into the UAC facility, the resistance encountered has only increased. More and more foul denizens seek our end, striking from the shadows in vast numbers that we can barely handle. I say barely when in truth we’d of failed to save the Earth ages ago were it not for the ability to load the game, a mechanic of convenience that I’m happy later games didn’t try to explain away with a flimsy in-setting explanation. Had they of tried I’m sure it would’ve involved corrupting forces, magic or something else best left unexplained.
Speaking of explanations, I’m always happy that you’re not bombarded with plot during the early Doom games. That’s not to say that I don’t like plot; some of my favourite games are rich in narrative, world building and story, but there’s a time and a place for it. A game about blasting back infernal forces with copious amounts of overwhelming firepower isn’t such a time. The focus of these games is a simple one, you vs your foes. Either you win and move on or lose and perish, leaving you to focus not on the chit-chat of minor NPCs and instead on the action before you.
For those curious of what I think of the plot of Doom 2016, I thought it was great. It rarely intruded, didn’t take itself too seriously and was light on fluff.
