You don't need to trade with people to get any equipment in particular in this game, Ultima Underworld is very generous with the equipment it gives you. It can certainly help however and can give you an edge in the early levels where equipment isn't that high quality a lot of the time.

I don't have the skills in-game to get better trades and I know that I'm often making horrific bartering in the effort to get gold, but it saves on bag space and on making lots of spots for hoarding items. In the end, I can spend the gold on repairing good equipment that I end up trading for. I can also get the repair skill if I feel so inclined, but it's always a risk.

That said, the Avatar also just likes hoarding gold. Gold is so much better to hoard then leather caps, wouldn't you agree?
