Bloodlines is a game that gives you the freedom to immerse yourself in as much or as little of the setting as you like. You're perfectly free to focus solely on doing the main quest, deviating only to sidequests that take your fancy. Alternatively, you can spend literal hours reading articles, scouring e-mails, listening to the radio and just watching the various NPCs go about their lives.
While some of that background information may prove useful in some quests - you never know when you might stumble across a password or a keypad combination - most of that lore is just there to assist in worldbuilding. It makes the place feel more like a living, breathing city instead of a self-contained sandbox where your ability to act is limited by what the game is programmed to let you do. That immersion is how you end up losing days to things like a video game and that's a sign that you're enjoying it.
