Wolfenstein, frequently referred to as Wolfenstein (2009), is a first-person shooter and fifth main entry in the Wolfenstein series. It was developed by Raven Software with support from Pi Studios and Endrant Studios, and originally published by Activision on August 18, 2009 for Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
The game once more stars William "B.J." Blazkowicz as the protagonist, who is sent to the German city of Isenstadt to investigate the activities of the SS Paranormal Division. During his investigation, BJ meets the local resistance, various townsfolk, as well as Wilhelm "Deathshead" Strasse, an antagonist from Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
Wolfenstein has a number of features popular at the time that distinguish it from its predecessors, such as regenerating health, upgradable weapons, and a hub world that connects the game's various levels. Also new is a magical medallion, which grants BJ powers such as the ability to slow time or see through solid obstacles. The medallion is connected to a parallel world known as the Black Sun Dimension, which the Nazis want to utilise a source of power. Like weapons, the medallion can be upgraded.
The game received average to positive reviews, with many reviewers considering it competent but forgettable. Sales were below Activision's expectations, and resulted in the lay-off of employees from Raven Software. Since 2014, the Wolfenstein has not been available on digital storefronts.
