Let's Play Wolfenstein 3D 30: Save Keys to Open Doors
I wonder if the game would've been drastically different if there'd been switches in it. There is the one at the end of every level and you could argue that the secret doors are a kind of switch but having doors that could only be opened by using a switch would've added an interesting new layer to gameplay I feel.
Some of the doors would remain open as long as the switch was pulled meaning you wouldn't be able to rely on hearing the sound of it opening to know an enemy was coming up on you. Some switches could be on timers and others would set off traps, opening doors that had only enemies in them that you could otherwise avoid. Doom and later games took full advantage of switches that did all those things and more, only now when I'm writing the description for this video did it cross my mind that switches could've been a more integral part of the game beyond secret doors and the level exits.
Perhaps there was a programming limitation that prevented it or it was an issue of the disk space on floppy disks. Either way, it's something to muse on.
