Let’s Replay Doom 3 BFG Edition #26: Plot Dump Time [Strobe Warning]
Be advised that this video may contains scenes not suitable for people who suffer from epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
One of the many things this game does right is the drip-feeding of plot to you in small, manageable doses that break up the combat. Sprinkled throughout as PDA audio logs, e-mails and the occasional cutscene involving living people, we’ve been learning about how the facility and what was going on in the days before the disaster in an organic way that helps immerse you in the setting.
While Ian McCormick isn’t in the game too long, he serves as one of the more major characters, in part because of the sidequest he sends you on to activate the teleporter and also because of huge amount of blackground lore he provides you with. The audio log you get from him may be the longest in the game and you’ll see his name scattered about in various e-mails sent to other personnel in the facility. He is a scientist who worked closely with Betruger on his experiments and one who carries a lot of guilt over what has happened. While I can’t say much for his chances once we leave his company, I think it’s his hope that by helping us he can in some small way redeem himself for the terribleness that’s been inflicted upon Mars City and all the lives lost.
