Let’s Replay Wizards & Warriors X #02: Kuros vs Malkil… Again
Fun fact: Did you know that I played this game before Ironsword? My siblings and all got Game Boys for Christmas one year – I think when I turned seven or eight – and while this game wasn’t under the Christmas tree, it was the fifth game I ever owned for the venerable handheld. This meant that I got a lot of playtime with this one, though I never got any good at it. I rarely reached the third level and whenever I did, the flying axes and brigands made sure I didn’t get any further. This is a platformers that forces you to memorise the location of many threats so you can react to them before they appear, a common tactic used back in the day to lengthen the play time of short games. It’s not so much of a problem if the game is enjoyable at its core but when it’s not, it can sap what little joy there is to be had.
It’s a good thing this game is still fun despite that, eh?
Wizards & Warriors X is a short but excellently put together platformer. The graphics are large and crisps, the controls simple and responsive and the music, while lacking variety, is catchy. The game is difficult but that’s par for the course with the series, though it can get a little too much in the later levels where opportunities for extra lives are sparse. On top of that, there’s no password or save system but and while the latter was common for the time, the former would have been a nice little addition to make the experience a touch friendlier. Even with all those negatives, I still enjoyed returning to the game, though I can understand this one won’t be enjoyed by everyone. If you want a difficult game that has that early day Rare charm, this is the one for you.
So, what’s next? I think it’s time to pivot away from the Game Boy and return to a game that is near and dear not just to my heart but many people’s hearts. Let us return to a world where things don’t seem to make sense yet do, where a critical mass of anarchy somehow makes order and a million to one chances happen nine times out of ten, provided of course you’re in the right place when they happen. I may have layered the hints too thick with this one but hey, you deserve an easy one every now and again. It’s not like the protagonist of the next game will have it this easy.
See you next let’s play!
