X-COM may have grown accustomed to plasma based weaponry in their prolonged fight against the aliens, but I’m still astounded at how utterly devastating that technology is. It all but levels the playing field in the air against the aliens and as we saw at the beginning when we were using ballistic weaponry, it outclasses almost everything the nations of the world have at the start of the game. The energy generation capable with the power generators we’ve found is astounding and the potential for reverse engineering the method the UFOs use to fly for our own purposes would allow mankind to reach far beyond Earth, through the solar system and beyond. All of this has been made possible with elerium.

Elerium is the lifeblood of the alien invasion and the fuel which drives X-COM research, pushing the boundaries of science to new and fantastic realms of wonder. The only downside is that the very resource X-COM needs for all these breakthroughs and the technology they’re building come from the very aliens that are trying to invade Earth and, should X-COM be victorious, there’s every chance we’ll get no more of it. We don’t know where the aliens are getting their supply and as far as we know, there’s no source of the element on Earth. Upon victory, our reserves of elerium would dwindle and fade and with it would go the ability to manufacture and maintain all the amazing things we’ve built.

Perhaps in time humanity will be able to replicate what elerium can do without needing it or will find a source of the element on another world to mine. It’s not wise to focus on that though, as the worry of running out of the precious resource presumes that we’re going to win against the aliens, something that’s by no means assured yet.
