Terror missions are a terrible thing – no pun intended for once – but terror ships that have crash landed are still pretty bad. Sure, you don’t have civilians to worry about but you’ve still got a lot of aliens and terror units and your soldiers are the only targets for them. You don’t want to be sending your rookies out of the Skyranger first, which brings about a curious dilemma at this stage of the game: when to let the rookies and less trained soldiers take point.

They won’t gain much experience if they don’t get many opportunities to take down aliens but at the same time, they’re not likely to achieve much against extremely dangerous foes like ethereals and mutons, save be that much more likely to die to them. Many people see all their soldiers as expendable but these days I like to consider each one that I send into battle as a valuable member of X-COM that shouldn’t be discarded for some small short term gain. Even the mightiest of soldiers started out as a rookie and given time, care to their positioning and a little luck, even the worst newcomer can become a great shot. At this late stage in the game however, you need to rely more heavily on your experienced soldiers, which means that your newer recruits will advance slower. They’ll still advance, just not at the same rate.

In the end, I’d rather have slower advancement than none at all because I sent a promising rookie to their death in the hopes that they’d kill an ethereal. It pays to be cautious, even now.
