In this playthrough I have come to appreciate the heavy weapon platforms. Something that I’d previously disregarded as a waste of money, time and time again they have proved their worth by taking shots that would’ve otherwise been aimed at my soldiers – get it, tanking? - as well as scouting out the battlefield. Sometimes they even score a kill or two but their accuracy isn’t that great. The rocket tank had the advantage of a powerful area-based weapon while the laser tank has unlimited ammo and is more effective against certain foes.

That said, even the laser tank has the same chasis as the ones you can buy at the start and that chasis has terrible armour ratings compared to what we’re up against. Granted, they can still absorb a lot of fire if the front armour is hit but the rest of it isn’t so great and when they’re destroyed, that’s half a million down the drain plus a day or so not spent making laser cannons to sell so we can build more. The cost is a minor thing as X-Com is currently rolling in spare cash, but the writing is on the wall for our HWPs; they’re showing their age and becoming less reliable. Fortunately, we’re fast approaching a time when we can replace them with something better, but that’s still on the horizon. Until then, we’ll have to cope as best we can, which is to say that I’ll try and make sure the tanks don’t blow up as often. No promises though.
