169Sometimes, no amount of planning and strategy will stop things from going wrong. You can take all the cover you can, position your troops ready for practically any situation and the game will still find a way to surprise you. Even when you can see the aliens they’ll sometimes do something you never expected or counted on, a plan so absurd and dumb that it catches you off-guard. Then there’s when the aliens manage amazing shots from across the map, reaction fire with impeccable accuracy or mind control a critical soldier at the worst possible time, not to mention the times where you just don’t know where the aliens are and they suddenly pour out of their hiding place and surround you.
In those situations, all you can do is hope that the damage isn’t too severe and react as best you can. It’s times when things go very wrong that make for the most tension and make the game what it is, a desperate fight against an overwhelming enemy that seems to know your every move and has a perfect plan to counter it. That’s not the case of course but it can certainly feel that way when everything goes wrong, but if you keep calm and think carefully you should be alright… most of the time anyway.
