There are few terror units I dislike more then cyberdiscs. Only the crysaallid gets close to the dislike I have for the unit that accompanies sectoids and yes, I don’t think sectopods are as dangerous. Granted, the sectopod has more armour and is paired with the far more dangerous ethereals, but sectopods don’t explode when they die nor can they fly. Those two things allow for cyberdiscs to ambush you from angles you don’t even think about and make engaging them in confined areas very dangerous. The explosions can take out sectoids and even other cyberdiscs if you’re lucky, but they can take out your own soldiers or kill a few civilians you didn’t even know were there. They can also start off chain reactions, be it with the power generators on downed UFOs or fuel pumps in terror missions, causing far more damage then you first counted on. Add to that their high accuracy and damage capability and you’ve got a threat that stays nasty through the entire game.

You don’t encounter them as often in the late game as you do early on, as sectoids are one of the aliens mostly shunted aside for mutons and ethereals, but don’t let them being out of sight let you move the cyberdisc out of your list of concerns. They can take out a plasma hovertank in a single shot if they’re lucky enough so just imagine what they can do to your veterans in their power suits. All aliens are a threat but the cyberdisc is uniquely threatening and an iconic foe of the game for that very reason, one that instils fear in the heart of any commander no matter how far in the game you are.
