Let's Replay X-COM UFO Defence #67: Not in My Backyard
Even at this late point in the game, the aliens are still pressing on with their enigmatic plans despite how successful X-COM has been. Despite that, the aliens still have one or two surprises up their sleeves that I’d never be able to anticipate, curious quirks of the game’s mechanics that you’d never think would work the way they actually do. Until this playthrough I hadn’t known about the points where certain alien missions have succeeded regardless of how many ships you take down, nor did I know how to ward off retaliation missions so the battleships never launch an attack directly at one of your bases.
And then there’s the fact that alien bases that are set up within your radius of detection aren’t uncovered until you find them with a craft. They end up giving themselves away with supply ship missions but until then, the aliens will happily operate right under your nose, furthering their sinister goals knowing that your detection equipment is pointed up at the sky rather than at the ground. We’ve seen that the odd alien base being on the planet is perfectly manageable but sometimes they place one in such a place that you can’t help but act against it.
