Let's Replay X-COM UFO Defence #66: Befuddling Kiko 101
183By this point in our efforts to save the world, missions to clear out UFO crash sites have a certain rhythm to them; we take the first few turns to clear out the aliens around our landing site, then I get the tank to scout out for the UFO while I get more soldiers ready to explore, dealing with any aliens we find along the way. Once I’m relatively sure that the surrounding area is clear of aliens, I begin to move the soldiers I’m going to use to enter the UFO towards the crash site and once there, I carefully have them scout out the area close to the external door for a few turns before exploring deeper. Usually the aliens will move to reveal themselves without me needing to step in further. Our squad having access to psionics makes all of this even easier, as we can use mind controlled aliens to assist us in scouting and uncovering even more aliens.
With such a well ingrained routine, the best way the aliens can ruin it is to do something I’m not expecting which forces me to do some very risky exploration. If I’m not sure where the aliens are and I’ve lost my scouting tank, the only way I can find them is to send my soldiers out to search the places I only glanced over, potentially walking right into the barrel of an alien weapon. It’s things like this that can get soldiers killed if you’re not careful and at this point I’d much rather avoid that, but I don’t get to decide when that happens do I?
