Let’s Play EoTB 2 #17: Behold, Beholders!
It was only a matter of time before the name of the game appeared somewhere and while the first entry in the series had it be the final boss, here we’re not so lucky. Beholders are a very dangerous opponent for many reasons, number one of which is their myriad of devastating eye beams. Their effects range from petrification, disintegration, sleep, and many other equally unpleasant things which can destroy an unprepared party with ease and a prepared one too. They can float and their central eye emits a cone of anti-magic, preventing spells from operating within it and magical enhancements on equipment from being active. Their weaknesses are that they aren’t that hard to hit in melee and don’t have that much health compared to other monsters, but getting close enough to hurt them is another matter entirely.
Facing one beholder is bad enough but here, Valendra and the party are going up against multiple of them at once which means multiple eye beams and thus, multiple chances to be reduced to a small pile of ash. Positioning and pre-emptive party buffs are key as the less time the beholders are alive, the fewer opportunities they have to deal serious harm. Having access to haste certainly helps here, allowing our front line to deal a lot of damage really quickly provided they’re lucky enough. We can only hope that their save rolls go in their favour as the group move further in, as going back is not an option.
This could go really badly wrong really quickly. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, eh?
