Lets review Twin Mirror: A fun, imperfect Mystery Thriller Game that is just really nice to play

You know those procedural crime shows that are not really great and the characters are a little bland, the dialogs are cheesy but you love them because they are comfortable and you can just relax with them and when they're over you're kinda sad because it would have been nice to stay a little longer? Well, Twin Mirror, produced by Dontnod Entertainment together with Shibuya Productions is that but as a video game.
You play as Sam, the nearly insufferable cynical ex-journalist who returns to his tiny hometown after his best friend died. Sam left the town and all the people there two years previously and hasn't looked back since. Now, he has to face all the people he abandoned and disappointed but even more than that, he has to find out, whether his best friend's death was an accident or murder.
Inspired by Twin Peaks and other smalltown mysteries, maybe even some Deadly Premonition to sprinkle on top, Twin Mirror gets the atmosphere but none of the interesting, eccentric characters. Almost everyone is weirdly bland and the dialogs can be a bit of a slog. However, despite this, the game is incredibly fun. As Sam, you talk to people, investigate and remember a lot. In your - honestly unnecessary - mind palace, you can revisit memories or recreate crime scenes to find out what happened as you uncover the mystery of Nick's death. And it is so much fun! The pace is relaxed, the puzzles easy and even the more intense scenes are not really something to drive up your blood pressure. After playing games like The Last of Us part 2, Amnesia and Little Hope this year, I thought that this was a lovely break from games that want to stress you out.
Twin Mirror is not groundbreaking but with a solid gameplay, a convincing atmosphere and a great pace, it's the perfect thing to relax, investigate and go with the flow which is such a lovely change of pace. You know, I think there's always a place for games that ease you into their world and don't put the pressure on. Yes, sometimes you want the intensity of Hannibal season 1, but sometimes, Midsumer Murders will do just fine.
