telling lies is an interactive, narrative video game developed by Sam Barlow and Furios Bee. You play as Karen, yes, her name is Karen, who comes upon tons of video recordings from David and three women in his life. With a special tool called Retina, you have to find out who David really is, what connects him to the women, who is lying and whether you're part of the whole thing as well.

Starting with an amazing cast, first and foremost Logan Marshall-Green who is absolutely amazing and terrifyingly convincing at playing David when he's at his best and at his worst, this game is a beautiful example how you can work with a simple concept and create true plot magic: parsing through videos to find out the underlying stories is easy for beginners just like pros. Apparently, you can also edit and combine videos, however, I played this on the PS4 which was not the platform this game was initially designed for, and I feel like I missed a few options or they were not available for the Playstation in the first place.
First things first, though: learn from my mistakes and read the instruction for Retina before you start playing. It will safe you a lot of hassle.

You can search the vast video library with keywords and even whole phrases. Since all videos have subtitles, you can also pause them and choose a keyword. All videos can be put into a library and you get a video history. I think, in the non-PS4-version, there might also be the possibility to tag videos and edit them - again, something I didn't do because I didn't find that option.

However, just by using keywords, you'll be able to go through all videos and explore the different stories and relationships. And let me tell you: there is not one single secret to be found and be done with it. Whenever I thought I'd found the big twist or lie, there was one more waiting for me. Due to the great acting and plot, it never got boring.

Now, if you prefer games where you're behind the wheel and can impact the outcome of the game, telling lies might not be the best choice for you. However, if you love exploring stories, get to know your characters and find out how much of an ass David really is, this game is beautiful. It has the drama, the thrill, the intrigue and even a cat cameo. No lies detected: I loved this game.
