It all began with the first Resident Evil. A game where you crept through a mansion at a snail's pace, opened doors so slowly you could easily make a cup of coffee while you played, and where the biggest challenge was often not the zombies, but the incredibly clunky controls. By the end of '97, everyone had played through this game at least 125 times. Even the people at Sega.

Because while Capcom continued to diligently animate doors, the people at Sega were probably thinking about how to spice up this sluggish survival horror thing a bit and then developed the light gun game The House of the Dead!

But Sega wouldn't be Sega if they left it at that. Because at some point, even the constant shooting wasn't enough to keep fans entertained. They wanted to finally punch the undead in the face with their fists and then pump them full of lead.

And so, at the end of 1999, they launched a game called Zombie Revenge, which was about as easy to digest as 10 pounds of bean stew, but also somehow fun.
