Astro Ace is a top-down Asteroids-esque space shooter. It's got enemy variety (and levels)! It's got a bunch of different weapons both primary and secondary! It's got bosses! It has different ships and unlockable starting loadouts! It's got a really simple control system that removes all excuse as to why I was so bad at this game!
I'll be honest: you watch me die a lot in this one. That's not the game's fault at all: It's a very simple game to pick up and play, but it does require you to actually pay attention so you're not constantly crashing into things like I was. It's an exceptionally tight experience with a fast combat loop, and the only frustrating thing is your own skill level which will build after a couple runs. Heck, I was getting markedly better runs by the 40 minute mark!
The visuals do feel a bit... 2010s flash-era game, but they are clean and fit the style of the game. It reminds me a lot of other games that used to come out on the XBox Indie Arcade. That's not an insult, by the way, but it did make me feel nostalgic.
It's $3.39 CAD on steam, and honestly for that price, there is nothing glaring that would prevent me from suggesting anyone play it.
