Let's Try Outbuddies (Kickstarter Demo)
Here's my Let's Try of the Kickstarter demo of Outbuddies. It's a 16-bit styled metroidvania in development by Julian Laufer. It's heavily inspired by classics like Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night.
Outbuddies's story unfolds in the sunken derelict city of Bahlam, located deep under the South Pacific ocean. After a shipwreck, our main protagonist John, a marine biologist, wakes up 36.000 feet under the sea. He´s severely wounded and unwillingly connected to a supernatural Buddy-unit, which can be controlled at will to manipulate his surroundings using various abilities like hacking, scanning, and telekinesis, as well as having the ability to attack enemies. Searching for answers about his displacement, John quickly realizes that there´s danger lurking in the dark...
So, the two must work together in order to solve puzzles, and survive against the various environmental hazards, hostile creatures, and bosses. Thankfully, they will have the support from the friendly Wozan tribe, who also wish to return to the surface.
The final game will have five distinct areas to explore, and several weapon systems and suit upgrades.
Based on my time with the demo, there's a solid baseline in place. The controls are responsive, the physics are tight, and the presentation is great. Special mention goes to the aesthetics and soundtrack, which create a haunting and uneasy atmosphere. It really feels like I'm exploring a run-down and potentially haunted city. Even little stuff like the breathing adds to a feeling of isolation.
I also credit the developer for having the ability to play local co-op. Most other titles in the traditional metroidvania genre don't offer this. The only thing I'd mark against this title is that the Blackthorn mini-boss is too challenging for a first mini-boss.
This game has been in development ever since 2013. I hope this title is able to be financed and completed in some fashion. I quite enjoyed playing through this demo. I'm confident that the developer is competent at achieving the several important facets of a classic metroidvania title.
