Let's Try: Souldiers
Souldiers may be one of the prettiest games I've played in a while. It's absolutely a love letter to the 32bit era games like Legend of Mana. I know I should talk about the plot first, but I simply have to gush over the visuals first. It's just so danged pretty. The sprite work, the back drops, the combat animations... all of it. Just Gorgeous.
Anyways, you play as Misc. Soldier #10992 of the army of Some Country Whos Name I Forgot. The army gets ambushed by an earthquake (probably not natural) and sent to a magical realm that is basically the Norse afterlife. You can still murder things, and you have to in order to prove your worth to ... someone. You can be a Soldier, Archer, or Mage (the demo only featured the Soldier), and off you go on a stunningly rendered Metroidvania.
I don't really have any gripes about the game: It looks great, it sounds great, it plays great. The characters have character, and there are like 20 different systems going on for you to min/max and customize your playstyle. The biggest hang-up I had was a noticeable lag/frame-drop when the game set up a check-point. Beyond that, this is a really solid Metroidvania.
