The crossbow is a one-shot kill within close range, but having to reload a bolt after every shot keeps it from being very practical. The explosive bolts are much better at range because if you stick an enemy, it will kill them after it explodes. It's unfortunate that the explosive bolts are unlocked at mastery 10, meaning you need 300 kills with the crossbow before you can even start using them. It's a grind for sure, and not necessarily a fun one at that.
