After playing The Dark Pictures Anthology’s “Little Hope” last year, I was looking forward to the apparently last game from the anthology “House of Ashes” even though its protagonists are military, it plays in 2003 and is all around a little too Semper Fi to my liking. BUT we know that Supermassive Games knows how to pull out some tricks, so I will be open, even though the bugs and super boring characters are not the greatest start to this story.

We start with a handful of playable and surprisingly many unplayable characters on a mission to find some secret info stations or whatever in Iraq, 2003. After a raid gone horrible wrong, we discover a big old cave that houses much more secrets than we hoped to find. Also of note: in a twist that's not nearly as big as the one in The Last of Us Part 2, we'll also see the story unfold from "the other side" (meaning the Iraqi Army, not the afterlife).

This first episode mainly feels like Tomb Raider but with more testosterone (which is kinda unnecessary but ok). I can already tell you that the game will shift gears along the way but it'll take a while to get there.
