Localization is the task of getting something (in this case videogames) ready to go into a different region or locale.
This is about more than translation, though translation is a big part of it.
You also need to think about ratings boards, VO, and disc layout.
Let's also briefly talk about supporting multiple genders.

I have this sinking feeling that I forgot a section on string lengths…
TL;DR you need 50-100% extra space for text because some languages end up a LOT longer when translated
