This longplay is from the game Mega Man X (RockMan X in Japan), being the first subsyme of the series Mega Man, that had appeared in the NES. Mega Man X was released in Japan on December 17, 1993, and the following year in North America and Europe.

Mega Man X takes place in the year 21XX, about 100 years after the original Mega Man series. A human archeologist named Dr. Cain discovers ruins of a robotic research facility that for once has been operated by legendary robot-android designer Dr. Thomas Light (the creator of Mega Man).

Among the ruins, Cain finds a large capsule with Mega Man X, a highly advanced robot with human-level intelligence and emotions and even capable of making his own decisions. However, all these abilities could be dangerous for humanity, in case some "X" turned against its creators, and therefore, Dr. Light before its death had the intention to insert within its creation the notion of sanity and good nature, and so the robot was inactive during the execution of a 100-year diagnostic program to secure these features.

Cain spends several months studying the robot, which is called the Mega Man X, or simply "X". and created a new legion of "thinking" robot-androids from it, who were christened "Reploids." However, with the free will given to a Reploid, brought the possibility of criminal activities; such dishonest Reploids are named as "Mavericks" by humans. The government creates an elite Reploid police force (known as "Maverick Hunters"), led by Dr. Cain's latest project, Sigma. For a while Sigma controlled the situation well, but later he also became a Maverick and declared war on humans, now leading the enemy army. X, ends up feeling guilty for thinking he helped to design all these catastrophic events, and then joins forces with the only other remaining Hunter, his partner Zero (Dr Wily's latest creation), in order to stop the Sigma threat at any cost.
