Ubuntu is a full-featured desktop Linux operating system, freely available with community and professional support.
The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be freely available, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any shortcomings, and that people should have the freedom to customize and change their software as they see fit.
“Ubuntu” is an ancient African word meaning “humanity for others”. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.
That said, now, Canonical has today released the beta version of the upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) operating system series to give the community an early preview of upcoming features and changes.
What's New in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Beta
With just three weeks to go before the final release, the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS beta is here for early adopters and public beta testers who want to see for themselves what Ubuntu developers have been working on over the last few months.
Under the hood is an updated toolchain with some of the latest and greatest GNU/Linux technologies including but not limited to GCC 12, Python 3.10, Ruby 3.0, Mesa 22, BlueZ 5.64, PulseAudio 16, xdg-desktop-portal 1.14, NetworkManager 1.36 , BlueZ 5.63, CUPS 2.4, Poppler 22.02 and GNU C Library 2.35.
Powered by the long-term supported Linux 5.15 LTS kernel series, which brings a whole new implementation of the NTFS file system to let you read and write data to such drives, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS beta comes with the latest and greatest environment GNOME 42 desktop by default with the triple buffer patch.
You'll enjoy most of the great features of GNOME 42, like the system-wide dark style for all apps and dialogs, as well as the new integrated screenshot interface and GTK4 look and feel for apps mimicked by the Yaru theme, but you will not like GNOME 42's GTK4 applications.
Most of the applications included in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS are from the GNOME 41 stack, except for those that have not yet been ported to GTK4, such as the Nautilus file manager (Files).
Another cool new feature of the Jammy Jellyfish release is support for accent colors, thanks to the amazing contribution of muqtadir, the independent developer who also managed to create a Customize section for the Ubuntu Settings panel with lots of tweaks for your Ubuntu desktop.
Other than that, as you can see from the screenshots in this article, the Home and Install icons have been moved to the bottom right of the screen by default, but you can place them wherever you like, there's a new wallpaper to match the Jammy Codename Jellyfish, and there's the new Ubuntu logo on the boot screen.
