Operation Torch, the invasion of French North Africa, was agreed to only after long and bitter debate. The decision and the campaign illustrate the problems of coalition warfare, from FDR and Winston Churchill down to the men at the point of the spear. It was America’s debut in the European Theater and brought into prominence American generals who became household names, including Dwight Eisenhower and George Patton Jr.
