Mahindra Ssangyong G4 Rexton SUV boasts five-star safety
287The Ssangyong Motor G4 Rexton sports utility vehicle (SUV) showed off its five-star safety rating during the model's introduction event at the Banyan Tree Club and Spa in Seoul, Tuesday.
Ssangyong Motor research head Lee Soo-won said the G4 Rexton is a "premium SUV that will be the best choice for motorists who enjoy outdoor activities."
First unveiled during this year's Seoul International Motor Show, the G4 Rexton SUV features the carmaker's latest safety technologies such as an advanced driver assistance system, quad-frame body chassis and nine-way airbag system. It received the top rating in the nation's safety assessment program for new vehicles.
The body frame of the Ssangyong G4 Rexton uses POSCO's "giga steel," strong but light steel products dedicated for vehicles, for the first time in the world.
According to the World Steel Association, the tensile strength of giga steel is about twice as strong as advanced high-strength steel. In other words, giga steel withstands loads tending to elongate to enhance the safety of vehicles.
A Ssangyong Motor official said the G4 Rexton's body frame's tensile strength is around 1.5 times higher than the minimum requirement to qualify as giga steel.
It also features the carmaker's latest assistance systems that include autonomous emergency braking, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot detection.
The G4 Rexton mounts the Ssangyong e-XDi220 LET engine that produces a maximum of 187 horsepower with a 42.8 kg/m torque. The model also has Ssangyong Motor's four-wheel-drive system.
Mahindra & Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra gave a thumbs up during his visit to the 2017 Seoul International Motor Show, expressing his confidence in the G4 Rexton's success. Mahindra & Mahindra is Ssangyong Motor's parent company.
"I am confident the G4 Rexton will be a game changer for SsangYong in the medium- and large-size SUV market," he said during the motor event last month.
The official said it aims to sell more than 20,000 cars in Korea this year.
INDIA LAUNCH AND PRICE
Without doubt the new gen Rexton is hugely impressive but the question remains on the price as Mahindra needs to launch it at an aggressive price. Whether it’s coming to India or not has not been revealed but most likely we will see an Auto Expo 2018 debut.
However, we will see it with a Mahindra badge since the earlier Rexton was not successful. Selling it with a Mahindra badge will be a better shot for the success of the new one.
