Make the shortcut shorter - EXTENDED CUT (Super Mario Bros 2, NES) - A Wild Glitch Appears!
395In World 6-3 of Super Mario Bros 2 for the NES, there's an easy shortcut you can take by diving into the quicksand at the beginning of the level. I would guess that most people who've played through this game are familiar with this trick. But there's a super cool way to make this shortcut EVEN SHORTER by jumping on top of the brick structure above the quicksand!
This video is the EXTENDED CUT of a short that I have uploaded previously, but the explanation is clearer and the JOKES ARE FUNNIER.
At the beginning of level 6-3, climb up the ladder and walk to the left. You will start to sink into the quicksand. There seems to be a brick wall blocking your path to the left, but if you hold LEFT on the D-Pad, you will begin to move LEFTWARD as your character sinks under the wall.
Keep holding left, and mash the A button to jump until you emerge from the quicksand. You will see a hidden door to the left of this brick wall, which will take you straight to the boss room.
But since the quicksand is ironically slow, speedrunners will employ a trick to save time here, and make the shortcut even shorter!
It's best to choose Luigi for this level, since his jump is so good. After climbing the ladder, pull the first grass patch you see. This will yield a Red Potion. Stand on the right edge of the tall cactus to the right, and run and jump toward the left wall.
Just after the height of Luigi's jump, throw the Red Potion at the wall. This will bounce the potion against the wall, and if you timed it right, Luigi will STAND ON TOP of the Red Potion after it bounces toward you. During this moment, you can jump again in mid-air to the left and land on top of the brick wall.
Walk to the left across the brick wall, and you will be able to access the door that leads to the boss! This trick saves maybe 10 to 15 seconds in a speedrun. It's cool, but it's absolutely unnecessary during a casual playthrough.
