This is another small improvement, skip to 1:55 , 14:10, 22:54 or 36:14 for examples of it. While the blending is definitely not fully understood, and certain cases are still highly problematic, the hardware is capable of doing some additive blending effects between layers, and so rendering the background layers in a more realistic order, allowing for some of these effects, means some backgrounds now show up that were previously blank, most noticeable in the stages with snow.
These effects are meant to apply to other layers too, but for the time being there's still no mixing between different layer types, so it's still always rendering the 4 tilemaps at the bottom, 3d in the middle, and sprites on top.
