Mario Beatdowns - n0ne Mario Highlights - Super Smash Bros. Melee
So like, when companies make characters for their video games, I often wonder how much work they put into creating the character.
Before I start letting my mind wander too much, I'm just going to say upfront that I totally acknowledge that the answer to this question is really going to be "it depends" - because I'm sure different companies operate in different ways, and different games require different things from their characters.
Kratos from God of War is likely going to have a lot more characterization than Mario. Or is that necessarily the case? And that's what I wonder about -
Like we as the consumers, we see all of the characterization (or lack of) that happens in the game. But do companies flesh out their characters beyond from what we see? Like has someone at Nintendo decided what size of shoe Mario wears? And to that point, who makes these decisions about the characters?
Do companies as a whole just sort of figure out who their characters are, or is it just like one person who does all of the heavy lifting and then their manager reviews their work and says "Yeah that looks okay" and then approves it?
Also, if the person who made the character in the first place is no longer working on the character, then wouldn't that mean that anyone else who works on the character afterwards is just technically making fan fiction?
I guess not, because it'd be the company that owns the character, not whoever originally created them in the first place. Really makes me wonder though - I'd love to see the creative process of character creation at a video game studio. Again though, I think it'd really vary from place to place.
