Toph Out Of Context
So I was reading about a piece of media where one of the characters kept track of how long it had been since they saw someone else - something to the effect of "It has been 5 years, 3 months, 18 days and 4 hours since I last saw you".
And at first, I was thinking that was incredibly unrealistic. There was no way that someone could keep a count for that long. But then I was thinking, "aren't I thinking about it the wrong way"?
Because think about it - if you wanted to keep track of how long it has been since you've seen someone, you shouldn't keep a count. Rather, you should just remember the time when you saw them.
So for example, if I saw Chris Evans today, instead of starting a count I should just remember "I saw Chris Evans on May 16th, 2021 at 4:46 pm". Because then that way, I could just do the math - so if I saw Chris Evans again in 2028 sometime, I could just do
[current date] - May 16th, 2021, 4:46 pm = How long since I've seen Chris Evans.
Now that I type this out this seems incredibly obvious, but sometimes it's not about the destination but the journey. I will say though that date addition or subtraction can be tedious though. I'm not sure why someone would want to have that piece of information.
Maybe it could be used as a conversation starter? Hard to say.
