"Breakout the Game Boy"

After covering the arcade, two computers, the NES, and Famicom Disk System, we're up to the home stretch as we take things back to Nintendo's first handheld gaming device.

Alleyway was a launch title on it in all territories back in 1989. It wasn't the best game in the world both no matter which metric you're going by, but it's okay for the Breakout clone it tries to be. One thing I didn't get to mention is that all of the bonus levels are Mario-themed. A Koopa Troopa design shows up to be taken out after Stage 6, for instance.

I guess the biggest hurdle for this title was its competition. You had a new Mario platformer that we played months ago and another title we'll see in a couple of videos that were the games to get if you owned this handheld back then. Alleyway just sort of came and went... just like this video. Next!
