"Mario Kart 64" for the Nintendo 64 (N64) is a kart racing game developed and published by Nintendo in 1996. It serves as the second main installment in the Mario Kart series, succeeding Super Mario Kart (1992) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Notable enhancements from its predecessor include 3D graphics for track design and support for up to four players.

Players assume control of one of eight iconic characters from the Mario franchise, navigating through 16 tracks arranged in four cups. In the midst of a race, players have the opportunity to acquire randomized items from designated boxes strategically positioned throughout the track. These items serve the dual purpose of hindering opponents and providing the player with a competitive edge. Unlike the previous installment, players now have the ability to carry multiple items simultaneously, and slipstreaming is introduced.

The game has four game modes: Grand Prix, Time Trial, Versus, and Battle. In Grand Prix mode, one or two players engage in a series of four consecutive three-lap races. Each race takes place on a distinct course selected from the four available cups. Time Trial stands as a mode exclusively for single players, aiming to achieve the fastest total time across three laps on the chosen track. Unlike other modes, there are no rival racers or item boxes. Versus mode allows two to four players to engage in individual races on any track, devoid of computer-controlled opponents. Battle mode accommodates two to four players, where the primary objective is to be the last one standing. Participants engage in combat, utilizing items within one of four available arena courses.

Ovreall, "Mario Kart 64" for the Nintendo 64 (N64) is a great kart racing game, with notable improvements over its predecessor. Visually, the incorporation of 3D elements and the introduction of as elevation, bridges, walls, and pits are great additions, significantly enhancing gamplay. The characters and items remain 2D sprites though. The slipstream mechanic is also a great addition, enhancing the gameplay experience.
