Ridge Racer V is the follow up to Ridge Racer IV on the PSOne that pushed the boundaries of PSOne graphics forward - goraud shading, lighting effects.
Ridge Raver V introduced a different racing mechaning including a new type of drifting that we see in all subsequent games on PS3, Xbox360 and PSP. It's an early PS2 game and it uses a lot of interlaced graphics, which gives it a similar jittery and jumpy feel as the original Playstation had. The developers still had to get to know the hardware which is renowned for being difficult to program for. This interlaced graphics makes capturing gameplay footage rather a challenge. This video doesn't do the game complete justice because of that. On a CRT or even LCD screen the interlaced graphics aren't as profound and doesn't cause the vertical resolution downscaling like you see in this video. It's best checked out in person! The NTSC version has a smoother image due to the higher refresh rate.
Now this game did feature a fair number of graphical enhancements that make it stand out and made my jaw drop back in the day: depth of field, environmental mapping on the cars, lighting effects, sparks coming off the cars as well as smoke effects. The emotion engine of the PS2 was truly put to work and for such an early game (1999-2000) it is stellar looking.
Emulating this game properly is not yet possible 100% due to the interlaced shadows rendered underneath the cars glitching out. So this is the game running on real hardware (PAL).
Captured a bit of gameplay on my old PS2 hooked up to a component hub and that feeds into an OSSC that converts it to a HDMI signal. That signal is fed into an Avermedia Live Gamer Portable that operates in stand alone mode. KDEnlive was used to edit the .ts file that the Avermedia created. I must say this video editing suite has come a long way! It's very usable!
