MDK (PS1) Playthrough - Hard Mode - No Deaths - All Cities Saved
Playthrough Of MDK for the PS1 with no deaths at the Hard skill setting. A very unique and very interesting game that mixes run-and-gun third person style gameplay alongside a FPS style since you are able to transition to it from the Sniper Mode feature completely unique to this game. This game was made at a time where pretty much all shooter games were FPS style where you could not see your character during gameplay and being able to see your character ( along the fact your main character has a completely unique armor design that doest resemble anything up to this day) was also unique. While MDK wasnt the first game that implemented the mechanic of Headshots, it sure made it more realistic to actually make it a integral part of its core design thanks to the Sniper Mode. This game also has a unique sense of humour in the way it presents itself like some of the names of the weapons you get while also taking itself serious.
This game is pretty challenging even under the normal difficulty setting and playing on hard mode is even more to the point where your evasive skills most be on point as even taking a hit from a regular "Streamrider" takes 4 HP out off you. If your Character (Kurt) receives up or more than 10 HP of damage on a rapid sucession, you will fall and be interrupted so on hard extra care should be taken as you will be interrupted quite frequently if you are not careful ( you do get invincibility frames once that happens notified by your HP number blinking). On Hard the game becomes very stingy with the amount of weapon pickup quantity so you have to be very smart on when to finally use it.
One thing that almost no one knows about MDK is what purpose is the compass around your HP. If you notice closely when you are playing, a portion of the green bar starts to become red. This is actually a timer that you have for you to defeat the boss of the level you are in as in doing so within the time limit you will get a different debriefing dialogue stating that you saved all the civilians hostage in the area (they are named minecrawlers). It doesnt have that much impact on gameplay itself but think of it as you getting either a good or bad ending for each minecrawler. On Hard mode the timer will expire very quickly and to save all the cities, you will have to optimize when to fight, pick up stuff etc almost in a speedrun fashion ( The last level of the game has a timer but failure or sucess wont change anything aside for you getting a funny onscreen message).
I would also made my playthrough with a no saving to it but MDK is a very sensitive game to read errors and could but rarely crash randomly so i save at the beginning of each minecrawler and in the case of me crashing during recording, i would off-screen get to where i was in the recording and resume from there as if you savestate MDK on a emulator it will instantly crash as soon as you try to move( others games like Metal Gear Solid are also like this).
Now you might be thinking: what does MDK stands for? Well for over a decade after the games release, people had theories on what the name would stand for. One of then meant it was the initials of the characters IE M for Max (The Four armed Dog which is also called Bones) D For Dr.Hawkins (The scientist) and finally K for Kurt (The character you control). The other is Mission Deliver Kindness and finally the last one would be Murder.Death.Kill. In the end, Mission Deliver Kindness was actually the name of the mission you are sent in the minecrawlers when it comes to the hostages. Murder.Death.Kill is the actual name of the game that was actually confirmed by the game head director 14 years (2011) after the games initial release and way after even when MDK2 was released. They changed to MDK because the company at the time was supposed to make toy merchandise of the characters ingame so having Murder.Death.Kill on a kids toy was not a wise choice XD.
