A playthrough of Capcom's 2010 action-platformer for the Nintendo Wii, Mega Man 10.

Played through as Mega Man on the normal difficulty mode

The first time I played Mega Man 10, I can specifically recall not expecting a whole lot out of it. I really wasn't a big fan of Mega Man 9, feeling that it was little more than a cheaply done cash-in on one of Capcom's biggest franchises.

I can also quite well recall just how much this game shocked me by blowing away any expectations that I did have for it. The format is similar to that used in MM9 - it is a "new" NES lookalike game based on Mega Man 2's mechanics, but unlike MM9, all of the graphics and sounds are new! The robots were more creatively designed, the weapons weren't merely recycled from older games, and the branching paths led to surprisingly different areas in their stages. Granted, the story is virtually copy-and-pasted from Mega Man Battle Network Transmission, but really - nobody plays Mega Man for the plot, do they?

I loved the graphics and sound on this one. They stay mostly faithful to what you'd see in a late-era NES title, and I really liked the creativity that went into some of these level designs. A few fall flat (like the ugly poo-brown sewer stage), but most of stages are really memorable this time around. Those cutscenes are not something you'd see on the NES, though. They're way too colorful and in my opinion, they're just ugly and cheap looking. Oh well, I guess you can't have it all.

I also loved the soundtrack - unlike MM9's music (which I felt was generally lame - too upbeat and totally generic sounding overall despite a few standouts), Mega Man 10's music made me feel like I was actually playing a new (old school) Mega Man title once again. These composers managed to perfectly align the style with the spirit of 1988 video gaming, and my inner child thanks them for it.

Finally, the game play felt good - just like 8-bit Mega Man should, and thankfully, the weak-sauce difficulty level of Mega Man 9 was upped a bit here. Playing on normal mode is a fair step up from the challenge of MM9, and I think that is a large part of why I enjoyed it so much. It's not an insanely difficult game by any means, but it's not a pushover.
