Mega Man 2 Difficult Run Part 1: Opening & Bubble Man Stage
Here's the story:
In the first Mega Man, Dr. Wily took 6 of Dr. Light's Robot Masters and turned them evil. Mega Man stopped these Robot Masters and then Wily himself.
In this game, instead of stealing more of Dr. Lights robots, Dr. Wily decided to make his own, 8 to be exact. Now Mega Man is sent to stop these guys and face Wily again.
Notice how the opening song of this game is the start of the ending song of the first game.
Mega Man 2 is seen by many to be the best game in the Mega Man Classic series, and quite possibly THE best game in the entire Mega Man franchise. There are so many references and homages to this game, it's ridiculous. Even Kenji Inafune himself calls this game the favorite one he made. It's title screen theme is known as the main theme of the series, and when Capcom returned this series bit to its 8-bit roots, starting with Mega Man 9 & 10, this game was used as the main inspiration for it, even though it has 4 more sequels that are also 8-bit.
Simply compare the game for Mega Man with Ocarina of Time for The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy VII for Final Fantasy, and Symphony of the Night for Castlevania, as well as probably Super Mario 64 for the 3D Mario games, and either Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic CD, and maybe even Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle) for Sonic the Hedgehog.
Anyway, back to this game. Because challenges in videos are more interesting, I'm gonna play through this game in Difficult Mode. This is the only mode available in the original Japanese version.
I'll start off by going through Bubble Man's stage. Wily made Bubble Man for underwater combat. His weapon, Bubble Lead, involves shooting acidic bubbles from his arm cannon.
Unfortunately, while Bubble Man is a great swimmer, Wily didn't program him to walk underwater, and beside swimming, he can only jump to move around. When Mega Man gets Bubble Man's weapon, it becomes one of his more useless weapons, but besides killing the Robot Master it's strong against, it does get to shine elsewhere.
Here are some changes and upgrades I've noticed between Mega Man 1 & 2:
- There are now 8 Robot Masters for Mega Man to face, instead of 6.
- The corridors between a stage and a boss are now much shorter, and contains no enemies.
- Energy Tanks debut. They are reserve items that let Mega Man heal on his own instead of getting health pickups from killing enemies.
- When Mega Man is hit in this game, the mercy invincibility protects him from being hit by instant-killing spikes. This wasn't the case in the first game. Sonic 1 and 2 had a similar situation.
- Some Robot Masters have more than one weakness, though how effective they are varies.
- The score system is completely gone. I think the reason why it was there in the first game was because Mega Man 1 was going to have an arcade version at one point. Since it didn't do anything in that game, anyway, I guess it was also removed because it was... pointless.
