Mega Man Next Remix Demo [Part 1] - Extreme Programming
I apologize in advance if this first segment is crammed with more annotations than usual. To be honest, I couldn't help it. There's so many weird things about this game to mention or showcase - possibly to the point of doing a segment on the weapons and Super Adapters alone, and even then, I would probably have to split it into multiple parts if I wanted to elaborate on every single one of them.
For now though, it's time to continue last year's tradition and celebrate Halloween with another sub-par fan game. This year, it's come in the form of the final game that was voted upon from the 1K Subscriber special. It's easily one of the most bizarre games I've featured on this channel, if mainly due to the overabundance of strange mechanics and content within.
First off, the gameplay mechanics are all over the place. There are actually four main characters you can play as in this game: Mega Man, Proto Man, Bass, and Slash Woman (don't ask). Without critiquing how faithful the "engine" is (since this is actually a browser-based game made in flash), the main character's basic movements are fine for the most part. However, everything beyond that is where this game starts to become a tangled mess.
For one, every character has their own unique menu and arsenal of special weapons. In the current demo, Mega Man and Proto Man are the only ones remotely finished, while Bass and Slash Woman have next to nothing to work with. Either way, a part of me almost doesn't want to know what their menus will look like when they're finished.
Using Mega Man's as a primary example on this - he has WAY too much on his hands. Mega Man is capable of using almost every single weapon from every single classic game (this even includes the Mega Man Killer weapons). While this admittedly sounds rather awesome in practice, the execution is very unbalanced. This is especially so after you figure out which weapons are essentially the most broken of the bunch, where upon you'll probably end up using them every time. Aside from the "weapon madness" in the menu screen, there's also several other oddities contained within this game, such as a skill tree and EXP that's apparently used in conjunction with it (you'll see it at the start of the video). There also seems to be another variation of this that involves strange microchip items that you probably find in-game, but it doesn't seem to be functional in this demo. There's probably even more weird stuff I missed (such as some potential items in the shop this game has), but like I said before, this game is packed full of it.
And as an extra note: Yes, I realize I skipped Brick Man (the guy in the top center next to Plasma and Shark Man). The reason for this is due to several recording errors I got when trying to do his stage. Whether it was Camtasia or my browser, the footage I ended up with was unusable due to large skips in the frames that caused the audio to desynch. I'll work on getting this fixed up and start with his stage in the next segment.
